Chocolate BallsFood is our common ground, a universal experience.  Tonight at Camp Inc. we all had a truly Universal experience.  The evening program was all about coming together and learning about different people’s countries and more importantly their food.

Tonight at camp we had Poland, Hungary, Israel, Brazil, and Australia – all represented by both staff and desserts.  The campers had the opportunity to work with some of our international staff to create these delectable desserts.  During the cooking time, campers were encouraged to ask questions about the staff’s home countries.  It was great hearing the campers discuss different aspects of all of the countries from climate to fun facts.  After the cooking was finished, we all headed to the gym to dig in.

Each group got up and discussed what they learned about the counties and also the kind of dessert they made.  Then we all lined up neatly, (if you buy that I have some land I would love to sell you) and dug into the great desserts.  We had nalesniki, which is a Polish/Hungarian crepe like pancake filled with jam and then covered in chocolate sauce.  Next up was Kadorei Shokolad (chocolate balls), which are Israeli truffles, which are rolled in rainbow sprinkles.   Our next stop on our international dessert train was Brazil where we sampled Brigadeiro, which is essentially a Brazilian chocolate bonbon, and boy oh boy where they delicious.  Last but by no means least we had a Fruit Trifle, which is a traditional Aussie dessert served after a Barbie.  The trifle was a layered dessert that included cake, jello with fruit, and it was topped off with custard, it was scrumptious.

Tonight was a special night at camp.

The entire camp came together to celebrate our differences and the places we are from as well as a celebration of our common love for dessert.  Most of us have fond memories of food from our childhood. Whether it was our mom’s homemade lasagna or a memorable chocolate birthday cake, food has a way of transporting us back to the past.  It is my hope that someday every camper here will be eating a delicious dessert in a far off land and remember there time at Camp Inc. and the fun they had one deliciously sweet night in June.
